2017 BMW M2

About a year ago rumors started to appear about an upcoming 2017 BMW M2 which would be the car that the 1M never was, a true return to basics with a proper M badge on it. However, BMW wanted to keep the car under wraps as much as possible so they denied the possibility of such a model for quite a bit of time until earlier this year when a few spy shots of the alleged M2 were made public. Now that BMW finally released the car we can get a sense of how great it actually is.

Even though it uses the same chassis as the 2 Series, the car has little in common with it when it comes to its engine and running gear. In fact, its chassis also uses more aluminum in its construction which does improve rigidity and it also makes it lighter. The running gear has been developed from scratch this time in order to make for a perfectly balanced car and its engine, while is available on other cars, has been tweaked for maximum efficiency.

Sporty Design – Interior & Exterior

So, what are the differences between the 2017 BMW M2 and the base 2 Series? Well, the M2 is actually slightly wider thanks to the flared wheel arches and it does come with an all new body kit. The front bumper is reminiscent of the one on the M4 while at the back it does have a quad-exhaust system similar to that of the M4. The headlights and tail lights have been upgraded as well with LED technology while the wheels come with the same design as those on the M4, only smaller.

Interior

Inside the cabin, the M2 is quite impressive because it comes with a lot of features for its class and even though it is a sport model, it does not give its passengers less comfort. The seats are great with very good side support, the upholstery is made out of leather and Alcantara while the dashboard comes as standard in a piano-black paint scheme which really stands out. BMW gave the car a special instrument cluster with the M badge which goes to 200MPH and 8000rpm and the steering wheel is the same as that on the M4.

The Engine range & Specs

The most impressive part about the 2017 BMW M2 has to be its engine which even though it is not the most powerful in its class, it makes the car a perfect package with the perfect balance between power and handling. The engine is the 3 liter inline 6 which is turbocharged by a twin-scroll turbo rather than two turbochargers. Thanks to this and a lot of tweaks made by BMW, it can provide up to 370 horsepower and 343 lb-ft of torque as standard while an overboost function will up the latter to 369 lb-ft of torque for a short amount of time. The engine can be mated either to a 6 speed manual or to a 7 speed dual-clutch automatic.

Thanks to the fact it weighs around 3,500 pounds and that it has massively wide rear tires, the 2017 BMW M2 will get to 60 MPH from a standing start in just 4.5 seconds when equipped with the manual and in around 4.3 seconds while being equipped with the automatic. The maximum top speed has been announced to be 155 MPH for the base model and 170 MPH for the one equipped with the performance package which will also add bigger brakes and higher performance tires.
