2016 Chevy El Camino SS
2016 Chevy El Camino SS – after a long time, first details about re-production and predictions about performance. The El Camino has been last made nearly 30 years ago and since then the car has been missing from the US market. Back in 2009 GM wanted to resurrect the name with a model based on the Australian Commodore UTE but they had to discontinue the program due to having problems with funds.
Since then rumors started to appear about them releasing a 2016 Chevy El Camino SS based on the Ute Commodore but this will very likely not happen, especially now when that car is going to be discontinued from the Australian market.
Instead, we do think that there is a slim chance for the El Camino name to come back to life with a model based on the current Camaro. The platform the newest Camaro is based on would allow them to build such a model and its engines and running gear are actually quite modular so it would be easy for GM to build such a model. Unfortunately the car has not been officially announced just yet but there are a lot of rumors that could prove to be true after all.
The Engine range
Under the hood of the 2016 Chevy El Camino SS we are likely going to see the same 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 from the Camaro but this time it would provide less power and more low-end torque in order to aid the car with towing. As such, it is safe to assume that it would make around 420 horsepower and more than 470 lb-ft of torque which would be impressive. The lesser models of the El Camino on the other hand will likely make use of either the 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 from the Camaro or a naturally aspirated 3.6 liter V6. Both of these would be similar in power with the smaller engine being the one with more torque to be offered.
Rear wheel drive will be standard and it will likely be the only choice for quite a bit of time after the official launch and all models should make use of either a 6 speed manual gearbox while as an option people will get the chance of getting an 8 speed automatic.
Design – predictions
The design of this future model is still a well guarded secret but if the rumors prove to be true then the 2016 Chevy El Camino SS will most likely share a lot of its design with the Camaro when it comes to its front end. It will get a similar looking grille and set of headlights but the bumper as well as the hood could be unique. On top of that, the design for the rear end will be unique and it could even be inspired by that of the original model.
Interior
On the inside, the upcoming Camino SS will likely share most of its interior with the Camaro in order to give the car the pedigree it needs to be successful. However, despite that, we do expect slightly lower end materials, especially on the low end versions of the car which will be intended as utility vehicles and not just as sport cars. However, the higher end versions such as the SS will get leather upholstery, a head-up-display as well as the latest driving technologies available from GM.
2016 Chevy El Camino SS Price & Release date
The release date would likely be some time at the end of 2016 for the concept model while a production car would likely not be released until the end of 2017. The price will likely be similar if not slightly higher than that of the Camaro so we do expect it to cost no more than $30,000 for a base model which would make it a really interesting choice for those looking for a light truck.
