2018 Audi A5 Coupe – Spy photos
The current Audi A5 has been around since 2007 meaning that despite all the updated it received over the years, it remains a rather old model on today’s very competitive car market. In order to regain some of its customers back and offer a worthy competitor for the BMW 4 Series and the upcoming Infiniti coupe, Audi is going to release an all new version of their very successful coupe some time in the coming months.
While from the spy pictures of the 2018 Audi A5 Coupe changes seem to be pretty small, take into account that this new car is just that, a new car.
What’s new for 2018?
This means that it will be based on their all new MLB Evo platform, so it will be up to 220 pounds or more lighter as well as a lot more rigid. If this doesn’t say much, it actually means that the new A5 will get faster, more efficient as well as better to drive thanks to its more rigid chassis. On top of that, the wheelbase is expected to increase by a small margin, so it should be able to offer more space inside the cabin as well as better on-road characteristics.
Redesign – Interior & Exterior
In terms of design, the 2018 Audi A5 Coupe will look a lot more like an evolution of the current model which is a bit odd considering it will be a new car. However, if we take a look at Audi’s other cars then it does become clear why they chose to do this. The front end will get slightly more aggressive with a bulkier design that is also found on the A4.
The car’s profile will also change quite a bit with a lower and wider body that will make the A5 look even more aggressive than it was. Unfortunately, the finalized design will only be showcased in the next couple of months so until then we’ll have to stick to the spy-shots.
Refined Interior
The good part is that we have a pretty good idea about how the interior of the car will look and that’s because it will closely follow that of the A4 sedan. Here, the instrument cluster will likely be the all new LCD panel which is optional on the A4 while the car’s infotainment system’s screen will now be fixed to the center stack instead of being a motorized unit. This should improve long-term reliability and it will also allow them to offer a larger screen.
Under the Hood
Engine wise, the 2018 Audi A5 Coupe is likely going to use the same engines that are found on the A4. This means that the base model will get a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine which will offer between 190 and 272 horsepower as well as up to 270 lb-ft of torque. A diesel is also expected to be offered in Europe while in the US, the car is likely going to get a hybrid option in order to meet the demands of those looking to use less fuel. The medium-to-high performance S5 version of the car will use a similar 3 liter supercharged V6 petrol engine to the one on the current model.
However, this time around it will make closer to 350 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. The top of the range RS5 on the other hand will ditch the old V8 in the favor of an all new 3 liter twin-turbo V6 which will offer well over 450 horsepower. Unlike the current model, all engines are now likely going to make use of automatic transmissions only which is now the norm in its class.
2018 Audi A5 Coupe Price
The price is still unknown at this point but when the car will be available for sale, some time at the end of the year or early 2017., we expect it to cost at least $41,000, meaning it will likely mirror the price of the ongoing model.
Competitors: BMW 4 Series Convertible and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible.
